Morocco

Rich and mysterious kingdom of 1,001 nights

The royal city of Marrakech is considered the most beautiful city in the Maghreb. The medina, an old town with its riches originating from the Almohad period, its labyrinthine, narrow streets, coloured souks and magnificent palaces from centuries past rivals the beauty of the new town developed during the French protectorate. Jemaa el Fna square is a major attraction in the medina. A lively place day and night, it is an exotic and colourful spectacle and irresistible to anyone visiting Marrakech.

Marrakech

Marrakesh

Approx. 10 km from Menara airport. With 850,000 inhabitants, Marrakech is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. About 10 km long, the ramparts of Marrakech form an impressive enclosure of hard-packed clay and lime encasing a rich and fascinating culture. Several buildings in the enclosure are testimony to this culture, including the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the tombs of Saadi princes and the Koutoubia mosque, to name but a few.

Excursions

  • Morning visit to the main monuments and palaces in the town. The excursion begins with a visit to the outside of the Koutoubia, one of the biggest mosques in the Muslim East and perhaps the most beautiful due to its harmonious appearance. Afterwards, a visit to Bahia Palace. Built at the end of the 19th century and surrounded by a garden of 8 hectares, it houses several luxurious secret apartments opening on to patios. The excursion continues with a visit to the private museum and the Saadian tombs. Several mausoleums were built in the 16th century to house the mortal remnants of thirteen sovereigns from the Saadian dynasty. End of the excursion with a visit to a tapestry workshop.

  • Guided tour of the souks in Marrakech covering every kind of craft (tanners, saddlers, blacksmiths, woodworkers, potters, jewellers…). The excursion ends in the fascinating Jemaa el Fna square.

  • The route takes you through the fabulous Haouz plain to the village of Ourika. Visit to the fascinating and charming Berber market. Continuation to the village of Setti Fatma, at the foot of the Ourika valley. The journey will be interrupted several times to take photos of Berber villages and the green, mountainous landscapes of the High Atlas. This will be followed by a visit to a Berber house and a windmill, with free time to walk around the village of Oulmes.

  • Situated approx. 171 km from Marrakech, this old privateers’ port, once known as ‘Mogador’, is one of the most attractive Moroccan towns on the Atlantic coast. Established by the Portuguese and designed by a pupil of Vauban, Essaouirait reminds visitors a little of St Malo in Brittany. The charming fishing village, medina and souks will pique your curiosity. The town’s renowned cabinet makers will reveal their ancient method of working with wood.

  • Departure from Marrakech to the Tichka heights. Stop at the summit of Tizi n’Tichka, at an altitude of 2,260 m. The excursion then continues towards Aguelmous. Stop at Aït Ben Haddou, the most famous of the Kasbahs that was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO and has appeared as the backdrop to a number of films (Jewel of the Nile, Gladiator, …). Free time. Donkey ride (optional). Continue to Tifoultout, then to Taourirt, including a visit to its Kasbah. Return to Marrakech with a final stop at Taddert.

The excursions on offer, as well as their prices and times, may vary depending on the location of the hotel. Excursion prices are provided for information purposes only and may be subject to change. For more information and to book, please contact your local LuxairTours guide.
