Costa Brava

Explore the dreamlike landscapes of Dalí’s homeland, where golden beaches meet the authentic countryside

In Catalan, Costa Brava means ‘rugged coast’, a name that reflects its wild, rocky shoreline. Stretching for nearly 250 kilometres from the French border to Blanes, it is home to some of Europe’s most famous seaside resorts, including Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar. The region is a popular summer destination for its stunning coastal scenery – from long golden beaches to hidden coves – but also has more treasures to be discovered inland, where charming medieval villages reveal a more authentic side of Catalonia. Girona, the capital of the province, boasts a rich architectural heritage is a testament to its a colourful past. The Costa Brava is also known for being the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, who was born in Figueres and where there is a museum is dedicated to his work. Just 100 kilometres south of Girona is Barcelona, so you can easily head to the Catalan capital for day out.

Must-do

  • The Costa Brava has a striking coastline that appeals to both those seeking relaxation and nature enthusiasts. Seaside resorts such as Platja de Lloret have long beaches with all the facilities needed for a day of seaside fun, while small, secluded coves tucked between rocky outcrops provide a more peaceful escape. You can also admire the coast from a different perspective on a catamaran trip, with the azure sea and golden cliffs as a stunning backdrop.
  • Staying on the Costa Brava makes it easy to explore Barcelona, Spain’s second city, which is just over an hour’s drive away. The Catalan capital is packed with things to discover, from the iconic Sagrada Família to Gaudí’s other architectural masterpieces, as well as countless cultural attractions across the city. Football fans can also visit the legendary Camp Nou stadium, home to FC Barcelona.

Must-see

  • Girona, the capital of the Costa Brava, is well worth a visit. Its rich history and picturesque charm captivate visitors through remarkable monuments, vibrant neighbourhoods, and a wide selection of restaurants and shops. El Call, the old Jewish quarter, is a charming maze of narrow streets, while the medieval ramparts and colourful houses along the River Onyar provide some of the city’s most iconic views.
  • Art enthusiasts should visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the artist’s birthplace. The museum houses the largest collection of his works in the world and traces his career from early paintings to later works. In Púbol, the Gala House Museum, set in a castle that Dalí dedicated to his muse, completes the journey into the surrealist world of the Catalan master.
