Midoun

Midoun

Midoun is the second biggest town on the island of Djerba. It is located in a region known for its typically Djerbian dwellings known as menzels and its irrigated gardens. The old town is located inland while the hotel areas are spread along the coast. Midoun is also home to three different souks and an old olive oil mill which dates back three centuries. Distance from the airport: 25 km.

 

Houmt Souk

Houmt Souk is the administrative capital of Djerba and its name means "market district". It is famous for its old town, museums, historical monuments and bustling, colourful souks which attract the residents of the neighbouring towns and travellers in search of a change of scenery. Distance from the airport: 8 km.

Zarzis

 

 

Zarzis

Zarzis has only recently established itself as a seaside resort and continues to grow into the tourist extension of Djerba on the continent. Located on the mainland opposite Djerba, it boasts long beaches and large palm groves at the gates of its new districts. Distance from the airport: 50 km.

Must-see

  • To absorb some of Tunisia’s history and culture, visit the Lella Hadria Museum, which hosts exhibitions on Tunisian art and Arabic/Islamic cultures.
  • Take some time to explore the island and enjoy the scenery. As well as its coastline of seemingly endless beaches, the island is also dotted with whitewashed houses topped with blue domes and land filled with date palms.  
  • The skill of Djerbian artisans can be seen in ancient jewellery, pottery and woodwork on display across the island. In Guellala, the narrow streets are lined with small workshops and craftsmen who will be happy to show you their work.

  • After being collected from your hotel in Djerba, you will cross the 7 kilometre-long Roman road from El Kantara to the Tunisian mainland. (If you are staying in Zarzis, you will be picked up there during a photo stop for the other guests.) 

    The journey continues to the provincial town of Médenine, where the day’s programme will be explained over a coffee break. From there, you will leave the larger towns behind and pass through small villages such as Beni Kheddache.

    Your trail begins in the heart of the pebbled desert, with a planned photo stop to capture the unique scenery. Throughout the day, you can discover the remarkable diversity of southern Tunisia. From the pebbled desert, you will make your way to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, nestled among the dunes. Here, you will have free time to explore the oasis and take a dip in the hot spring. For those seeking more adventure, camel rides or quad bike excursions are also available (not included).

    After an active morning, you will have the chance to enjoy a delicious lunch before continuing to Matmata. A brief stop in Tamazret is then followed by a visit to a troglodyte dwelling in Matmata, where you can savour homemade rosemary tea and Tabouna bread with olive oil and honey. The final stop of the day is Toujane, where you will explore Ksar Metameur, a traditional granary, before returning to your accommodation in Djerba or Zarzis.

     

    Duration: Full day

  • This tour takes you along the Roman road connecting the island to the mainland to Guellala, a mecca for handmade pottery, to visit its cultural heritage museum devoted to traditional arts, customs and folklore. The tour continues with a visit to the village of Erriadh and one of the oldest synagogues in the world, La Ghriba, where pilgrims flock in May every year to pray. During this stop, you can also admire the work of street artists from all over the world in Djerbahood, an open-air art museum. In Houmt Souk, you can wander through the colourful alleys of the souk and be intoxicated by the smell of spices. After lunch (drinks not included), the trip will end with a visit to the Djerba Explore Park, the largest crocodile farm in the Mediterranean.

     

    Duration: full day

  • This two-day excursion will give you the opportunity to discover another authentic aspect of the country:

     

    Day 1: You will leave the island of Djerba via the Roman road towards the salt lake Chott El Djerid, where you will stop briefly to watch the phenomenon of vaporization, before taking the road to Tozeur. You will then check into a hotel in the city (full board) and after lunch, you will board a jeep to Chebika to explore the beautiful mountain oasis of Tamerza and its waterfalls.

     

    Day 2: After breakfast, you will head to the old town of Tozeur, where you will be able to discover its unique architectural heritage and stroll through the charming and extremely well preserved streets. The tour will continue with a visit to Douz and an optional camel ride between the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental. 
    You will then head to the Berber village of Matmata for lunch and a visit to the troglodyte dwellings. These unique houses, carved into the side of the mountains, were designed to maintain coolness during the hot spells that the region experiences. At the end of this visit, you will return to Djerba via the Roman road.

     

    Duration: 2 days

  • At the port of Houmt Souk, you will board a lively pirate boat that will take you to the island of the pink flamingos. During this hour-long journey, keep an eye out for dolphins, which are often spotted on this route and will even let you take their picture. On the island, you can go for a swim or just relax on the sandy beach before sitting down for a delicious lunch prepared by the crew. On the way back to the harbour, you will also be able to watch a net fishing session.

Important information

Entry formalities:

From 1 January 2025, European nationals will only be able to enter Tunisia with a passport valid for at least 3 months after the planned date of return.

Until 31 December 2024, identity cards will continue to be accepted only if accompanied by a voucher with details of the hotel reservation. For travellers of German nationality, the passport or identity card must be valid for more than 6 months after entry into Tunisia.

 

Security measures concerning baggage transport:

For Tunisia, Luxair applies security measures that comply with the instructions issued by the Luxembourg Civil Aviation Authority.

To facilitate the implementation of these measures, we favour the use of rigid baggage with an integrated padlock or baggage that can be padlocked or sealed to prevent the intrusion of illicit objects. We therefore strongly encourage our customers to use this type of baggage and to ensure that it is in good condition, so that seals can be affixed without leaving a gap of more than one centimetre. Customers carrying baggage that cannot be fully secured with a seal must have their baggage laminated at their own expense before checking in at Djerba.

We would be grateful if you would comply with the instructions given by the staff at the destination airport, and would remind you that any failure to comply with these procedures may result in your baggage not being transported.

 

Good to know:

The Ramadan period is likely to affect the opening and menu of certain bars and restaurants located outside the hotel, as well as certain activities offered by the hotel and external service providers.

Correct dress is required in the hotels at dinner time (long trousers for men).
